Repiping in Prescott & the Verde Valley

The usual warning signs are water pressure that keeps slipping, a rust or brown tint when a tap has been sitting unused, pinhole leaks appearing in a new location every few months, and visible corrosion on pipe where it runs through the garage, attic, or crawl space. A single leak is a repair. Leaks showing up in different runs of the same system usually mean the pipe itself is the problem.

Two older pipe materials drive most of the demand. Galvanized steel, common in homes built before the 1960s, corrodes and scales from the inside until flow drops and the water discolors. Polybutylene, the gray plastic supply pipe installed from the late 1970s into the mid 1990s, fails at the fittings and is no longer approved for new potable water installations. Hard water accelerates the process. Prescott water averages 4.3 to 7.6 grains per gallon according to the City of Prescott water quality report.

Both are standard for modern supply lines and both are code-approved. PEX is flexible, which usually means fewer wall openings and faster installation, and it handles freezing better than rigid pipe. Copper is rigid, long proven, and preferred by some homeowners for that reason. Less than most people expect. New supply lines are routed to keep wall and ceiling openings to a minimum, and access points are cut only where a connection has to be made. Water is shut off for part of each working day and restored before we leave. Once the new lines pass a pressure test, we patch the openings and clean up. Your drain and sewer lines are not part of a supply repipe and stay where they are.

It depends on the pattern. If a single run failed and the rest of the system tests fine, a targeted repair is the sensible move. If leaks keep appearing in different parts of the house, if pressure has fallen off across every fixture, or if the home still has original galvanized or polybutylene supply lines, each new repair is buying a little time on a system that is already at the end of its service life.
